The BNI ART Institute prepares health care providers, peer educators and social service professionals to screen patients for substance abuse and other behaviors that compromise health, motivate them to change behavior through a brief negotiated interview, and refer them to resources that will support their agenda for change (SBIRT). Emergency Departments (EDs) are hard-pressed to provide timely, appropriate and comprehensive care to patients with high risk alcohol use and dependency and drug abuse. The Institute can collaborate to establish the capacity for screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) in emergency departments, train health promotion advocates to provide SBIRT, andbuild collaborations between local EDs and the substance abuse treatment system and other community resources. Each program is tailored to the specific needs of the local area, and designed for sustainability.
The Institute offers expert technical assistance and consultation for needs assessment, project development, implementation, billing, data collection and evaluation. Our curriculum package was developed specifically to meet the needs of emergency and urgent care settings, and has been tested in sites across the nation. Our educational teams provide instruction in evidence based SBIRT principles and skills training for multidisciplinary audiences, using an array of interactional methods (videos and role plays in addition to slide shows). We can arrange single workshops or a series of events, and we also provide opportunities for hands-on experience with our staff at Boston Medical Center.
