Interactive Cases: SBIRT in Action

Motivational interviewing is directive, encouraging and facilitating progress towards a goal, but respectful of individuals and their choices. In the case of alcohol screening and intervention, the goal is drinking within NIAAA guidelines. In these cases, we present a number of evidence-based strategies to accomplish this goal.

We have provided 8 cases for you to review. As you listen to these cases, refer to the scoring sheet for adults or scoring sheet for youth. Watch how the interviewer handles the components of the brief negotiation with the patient. How well did the interview follow the algorithm?
